My country home is in the northern part of Kõrvemaa. There I have come to understand how musical the wind is. Naturally, it is spontaneous, but often it is capable of surprising with its precisely measured “compositions”. It’s a powerful natural organ that makes the northern lights commence to glow and sings the Song of Songs to the Boreal Spirit. The most beautiful words about the wind come from old Estonian folk songs.

When Anu asked me to write a piece for the concert bearing the subtitle Enigma, then I knew what I would do. The wind can spin and hide, scatter and pick up musical patterns, harmonies and melodies. Turning everything into one song.

In the Southern Estonian dialects, tsirgutii is Milky Way. Milky Way, the Bird Way or Birds’ Way in Estonian – is a widespread belief, and in Estonian archive materials, the Birds’ Way is mainly denoted as the path used by migratory birds.

“Longer Than a Thousand Summers” is like a look from times long past… So it could be a process, or a going. In the beginning, something is “born”, something “lives and burns”, and then… I wrote this piece in the countryside, in June. Late spring and early summer is my favourite time of the year – it is an unsettlingly beautiful time, a time of amazing smells and freshness outside. Silent songs in based on three melodies found from „The Song Book of Dolores“. The first one caught my attention with its extensive range and flow, resembling a blooming flower. The second part seemed to reflect on a folk tune from West Estonia. The melody of the third part ispired me with its usage of shifting scales and overtones.

The work was written specially for my childhood friend Martin Kuuskmann. The basis of the work is several Estonian herder tunes and it has several meanings. Herder melodies are like the “Estonian blues”, which were sung to keep sadness and loneliness at bay. In these songs, frequently consisting of phrases with just a few notes, you can feel great power. The symbolic meaning cannot be overlooked, either. For me, it signifies something distant, golden and innocent. Tõnu Kõrvits

I hoped I would get around to setting one of Astride Ivask’s poems to music (now I have done, but in a slightly different manner). I was inspired by a Oriolus singing, which has been characterized as a “somewhat melancholy multisyllabic purely flute-like whistle”, and the end of the phrase of which is adorned by a descending three-note motif that is characterized by nearly unchanging intervals: G-E-A. In addition, I also made use of a fairy tale-like folk song from Urvaste. This work is written for Virgo Veldi.

Helios Helios is based on the Estonian pastorals and "sunspells" on one side. Especially the last ones with their often mnenodic short tunes, that yet sound magical and enchanting. They were sung to chase away the rain and to bring out the Sun again. I have not used direct quotes from them, rather than reflections and intonations of these songs. I have often entwined them to some other type of musical pattern. On the other hand I have been inspired by a book by the Estonian ex-president and a writer, Lennart Meri, "Silverwhite" which talks about the Kaali meteor and it's impact on the Estonian folklore. Kaali is a small group of 9 meteorite craters on Saaremaa, Estonia. It has been speculated that the crater lake of Kaali played a part in the mythology of the region. It was known as a "sacred lake", and there is archaeological evidence that it was a place of ritual sacrifices for many centuries. According to a theory first proposed by Lennart Meri, it is possible that Saaremaa was the legendary Thule island, first mentioned by ancient Greek geographer Pytheas, whereas the name "Thule" could have been connected to the Finnic word tule ("(of) fire") and the folklore of Estonia, which depicts the birth of the crater lake in Kaali. Kaali was considered the place where "the Sun went to rest". The explosion has been described as if two suns had been shining in the sky at the same time. Tõnu Kõrvits

I have written quite a few pieces about Thule – the mystic and mysterious Northern land. Recently “Elegies of Thule” and now “Thule Patterns”. One may say that Estonian nature and people is the common line in these pieces. There I have also turned to the most primordial source – folksong. There are three movements (or patterns) in “Thule Patterns”. I tried to catch the kind of “motion” that can be met in old knittings and belt-ornaments.

La folia is one of the oldest European musical themes. Folia has been influenced by Scandinavian folk music but a melody with the same name can also be found in the Canary islands and also in Brazil, where it was brought by African slaves. Throughout music history, both „older“ and „newer“ folia are known and used. The newer folia is rather a basis for the improvisation and this brings it very close to contemporary jazz. For me, La folia is very old form of blues.

Estonian sacred folk tunes used and collected by Cyrillus Kreek.

Estonia’s sacred folk tunes have for years been one of my favourite topics. That is why in Kreek’s Notebook, I used music that had been written earlier, and arranged and adapted it as necessary.Part IV and VII are new compositions. Part III, V and VI were originally written for string quartet. However, part II for example is already the third adaptation – the original was for string quartet, later I arranged it for electric guitar and strings, and now this version for male voices and strings. The final part VII is the finale from another one of my cycles, “Elegies of Thule”, to which I now added choir. So this is not a premiere performance in the strict sense of the word. But it is the first time these adaptations of sacred folk tunes are being performed here, in Kreek’s Notebook. I have thought about leaving the work “open” so new parts can later be added.

Peiu: Kui ilus sa oled, kui võluv,
lemberõõmude tütreke!
Sihvakas oled sa nagu palmipuu,
su rinnad on datlikobarad!
Ma mõtlen: ronin nüüd palmilatva,
hoian kinni ta pööristest!
Siis on su rinnad marjakobarad,
su hingeõhk kui õunte magus vein,
su suudlus kui magus vein,
mis voolab otse kallima suhu,
nõrgub üle uinuja huulte.

Neiu: Mina olen oma kallima päralt
ja tema igatseb minu järele.
Läki, mu kallim, lähme väljadele,
jääme ööseks küladesse,
varahommikul viinameäe!

Vaatame, kas viinapuu ajab võrseid,
kas ta õied on lahti löönud,
kas õunapuud õitsevad –

Päike on mind põletanud.
Mu ema pojad olid mulle kurjad,

ning läheb tagasi oma paika,

Tuul puhub lõuna poole
ja keerutab põhja poole;
keereldes, keerutades puhub tuul
ja alustab taas oma ringkäiku.

Kõik jõed voolavad merre,
aga meri ei saa täis;
paika, kuhu jõed on voolanud,
sinna voolavad need üha.

Koguja 1: 5–7 * The sun rises and the sun goes down; then it presses on to the place where it rises.

Blowing now toward the south, then toward the north, the wind turns again and again, resuming its rounds.

All rivers go to the sea, yet never does the sea become full. To the place where they go, the rivers keep on going.
