„Winter Island“ by Mirjam Tally will be premiered in Sweden

Mirjam Tally

Today, on February 8, Mirjam Tally’s new piece Winter Island for violin, viola and cello (2009) will receive its premiere in Stockholm. Chamber work, commissioned by Swedish Radio, will be performed by Cecilia Zilliacus (violin), Johanna Persson (viola) and Kati Raittinen (cello) at Nybrokajen 11 Concert Hall at 7 pm. Besides the work by Mirjam Tally, the program also includes chamber music by Jean Sibelius and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Sound is central in Mirjam Tally’s (b. 1976) creations. Her music brims with playful contrasts – humorous, dramatic and poetic uses of sound are mixed there. So far she has mainly written chamber and electronic music in which acoustic and electronic sounds often interweave. Sometimes she uses Nordic or exotic folk instruments (Estonian zither kannel, didgeridoo, tanpura, accordion and others) and treats folkloric sound material with a modernist open mind. In Tally’s works Estonian poetry (Hasso Krull, Elo Viiding, Indrek Hirv) holds an important position.
