Saaremaa Opera Festival: Yun Isang. Sim Tjong

Sim Tjong by Isang Yun was commissioned by Germany for the opening ceremony of the 1972 Olympics in Munich. This opera, performed with Western instruments, is particularly notable for its impressive blend of traditional Korean folk tale and contemporary music. It was premiered that year at the Bayerische Staatsoper and received high praise for “expressing the mysterious spiritual world of the East with profound sound and meticulous design”.

Saaremaa Opera Festival: C. W. Gluck. Orpheus and Eurydice

Orfeo ed Euridice by the composer Ch. W. Gluck, known as the ‘Opera Reformer’, is based on the Greco-Roman myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The story turns out happily where Orfeo, unable to forget his suddenly deceased wife Euridice, descends to the underworld to find her and moves the god with his song, allowing him to return to the earth with Euridice. Noteworthy is the use of water to represent the worlds of the living and the dead, showcasing the essence of traditional Baroque opera to the audience.

Puccini’s beloved opera Madama Butterfly set in Nagasaki, Japan. It tells the tragic story of Cio-Cio San, who waits alone for her husband to come back with lyrical and dramatic melodies. It is well known for its famous arias including “Un bel di vedremo” from Act 2 and the “Humming Chorus” from Act 3 and the use of the Eastern pentatonic scale in parts of the opera creates an exotic atmosphere. Cio-Cio San’s poignant longing and love, expressed through Puccini’s music, promise to leave an unforgettable impression on the audience.

International Contemporary Music Festival AFEKT

This year’s festival theme, “Zwei Gefühle”, is inspired by Helmut Lachenmann’s work of the same name and reflects the contrasting yet resonant musical worlds of Arvo Pärt and Helmut Lachenmann, whose 90th birthdays are celebrated during the festival. Also honored are Luciano Berio and Pierre Boulez, both marking their 100th anniversaries – towering figures of musical modernism.

Ensemble for New Music Tallinn in Italy, Teatri del suono festival

Since 2020, the festival Teatri del suono, is a musical and interdisciplinary project which launched in Trieste, during ESOF (Euro Science Open Forum) 2020, for the Science in the City Festival. The collettivo cantierezero organizes and promotes the festival’s activities with the aim of understanding and disseminating both contemporary music and cultures, through a transdisciplinary, accessible and unconventional approach between music, arts and knowledge. Each piece in the programme of Ensemble for New Music Tallinn opens a different kind of aperture — spatial, emotional, technological, or cultural — and the full arc of the programme reflects our ensemble’s values: curiosity, risk, and sonic diversity.

Sylva (Die Csárdásfürstin). Premiere

Beneath the sequins, champagne, and Csárdás rhythms, in Imre Kálmán’s enduring operetta Sylva (Die Csárdásfürstin), lies a tale of transformation, exposing themes like class, personal freedom, and societal hypocrisy. Puuluup and VHK String Orchestra

The „hiiu kannel“, also recognized as the Swedish lyre, bowed lyre, or talharpa, is an instrument steeped in history. Originating in the British Isles during the 11th century, it likely made its way to Estonia via Scandinavia, primarily finding a home on the island of Vormsi. Therefore, this concert presents a unique encounter where the instruments of a classically structured string orchestra meet their ancient predecessors. Historical concepts are subverted, with the new becoming old and the old, new.
