  • Ambra   “Ambra”, for symphony orchestra, was written in spring 2002. Once, while writing the piece, a wondrous aroma wafted past my nose. It seemed to come out of nowhere, a smell that I identified later on the basis of an old memory as the scent ambergris. A very subtle, fine aroma, which I smelled for the first time on the endless narrow streets of medieval Fez. Now it seemed to flow like eternal sunshine, the far echo of a distant memory.

  • Be Lost in the Call According to Toivo Tulev, the title was borrowed from the closing lines of an English translation of a poem by Persian poet Mevlana Jalaluddin al-Rumi (1207–1273). – “Remember God so much that you are forgotten. Let the caller and the called disappear, be lost in the Call.”
In this composition a measured gradual movement, characteristic of western liturgical music, commingles with oriental tone-colours and disjointed modernistic melodies. All the tensions eventually fade away in the phonogram-sounded phrase, “Cor Jesu Sacratissimum” – “the Most Sacred Heart of Christ”…

  • Quella sera “Quella sera” was written for the festival London Baltic Arts. In the polyrhythmic texture, quivering strings and the ring-and-tinkle of percussion are rendered prominent. In the latter half of the composition dreamlike shadows of Baroque melodies engender a calmer mood.
“Quella sera” is the Italian for “that night”. Tulev refers to the following lines – “That night when he submitted himself to his persecutors, he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke the bread, gave it to his disciples and said…”
The text that originally inspired Tulev comes from the Eucharistic Prayer II and alludes to the mystery of communion in Christ and to the corresponding part of Mass.
