Vladimir Tarkpea

September 3, 1908 Kuldīga, Courland Governorate – November 30, 1978 Tallinn
Member of the Estonian Composers' Union since 1945

Vladimir Tarkpea graduated from the Tallinn Conservatoire in composition in the class of Artur Kapp (1932) and elementary-school teacher training college Tallinna Pedagoogium (1937).

He worked as a piano player in Tallinn cinemas and clubs (1929–1944) and concertmaster in Estonia Theatre (1944–1949) and Tallinn State Drama Theatre (1949–1952). From 1952–1977, Tarkpea was Musical Director of the Estonian SSR State Puppet Theatre.

Due to the longtime work in theatre, music for theatre plays forms the considerable part of his oeuvre. Especially notable is his music for more than 30 puppet plays. His songs are published in compendiums "Armastusest. Esimene tsükkel. Vokaalsed miniatüürid häälele ja klaverile" ("About Love. The First Cycle. Vocal miniatures for voice and piano", NSVL Muusikafondi Eesti Vabariiklik osakond, 1958), "Kassi maja. Muusika nukunäidendile" ("Cat's House. Music for puppet play", NSVL Muusikafondi Eesti Vabariiklik Osakond, 1948) and "Muinasjutt sokust" ("Fairytale of a Billy-Goat", NSVL Muusikafondi Eesti Vabariiklik Osakond, 1948).
