Toivo Tulev author’s concert in Tallinn Methodist church


On October 23 at 7 pm, Toivo Tulev author’s concert will take place in Tallinn Methodist church. Performers are Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and Latvian Radio Choir under the direction of Kaspars Putniņš, and soloists Heigo Rosin (percussion), Vambola Krigul (percussion), Ka Bo Chan (counter tenor), Age Juurikas (organ), Virgo Veldi (saxophone), Agate Burkina and Inga Martinsone (soprano). Audience can listen following Tulev’s works: Legatissimo (2011) for percussion, Summer Rain (text: hymn „Rorate caeli“, Toivo Tulev, 2006), Flow, My Tears (text: John Dowland, Holy Week Improperia, Toivo Tulev, 2007) and Tanto gentile (text: Dante Alighieri, 2010) for choir a cappella, I said, Who are You? – He said, You (text: Mansur al-Hallaj and T. S. Eliot, 2007) for counter tenor, alto saxophone, organ and string orchestra, and world premiere of Magnificat for choir, percussion and string orchestra. Concert will be broadcast live on Klassikaraadio.

The second concert will be held in Riga, Old St. Gertrude Church on December 9, when also Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten and De profundis are in the program.

Toivo Tulev is inclined to musically conjoin the expressionistic and the religious. Tulev’s musical idiom has been influenced by his active participation in several early music vocal ensembles and by deep interest in Gregorian chant. Twice, for 2001 and 2003, Toivo Tulev has been awarded the Annual Prize of the Endowment for Music of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. In 2006, he was awarded the Annual Music Prize of the Estonian Music Council. Toivo Tulev’s author CD-s have been released by Estonian Radio („Be lost in the call“, 2004) and Harmonia Mundi („Songs“, 2008).
