Theodor Sink

Theodor Sink is a versatile musician who is an active soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. He has studied cello at the Tallinn Music High School with Laine Leichter and Leho Karin, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with Prof. Henry-David Varema and the Sibelius Academy in Finland under the supervision of Prof. Marko Ylönen. He has participated in many master courses, including Lluis Claret and Patrick Demenga, and has won several prizes at the national and international cello competitions.

Since the season 2017/2018, Theodor Sink holds the position of the principal cello of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. Previously he has appeared with the ENSO both as a section player and guest principal cello. He made his debut as a soloist with the ENSO in 2017, performing Erkki-Sven Tüür’s Cello Concerto. At the opening concert of the 2018/19 season, he performed Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 under the baton of Neeme Järvi. Additionally, he has been a member of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and has performed with the Nordic Symphony Orchestra and the Estonian Festival Orchestra. As a soloist, he has appeared with the ENSO, the Pärnu City Orchestra, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, the orchestra Uue Tänava Orkester, the Estonian Festival Orchestra, and the Sinfonietta Rīga under the conductors such as Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Kaspar Mänd, Kristiina Poska and Juha Kangas.

His repertoire also includes cello concertos by Robert Schumann, Pēteris Vasks, Dmitry Shostakovitch (No. 1 in E flat major), Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (in A major H 439), and Lepo Sumera.

As a chamber musician, Theodor Sink has collaborated with renowned musicians David Geringas, Elisabeth Leonskaya, Víkingur Ólafsson, Marina Ciche, Florian Donderer, Eva Bindere and Nathan Braude, as well as Estonians Egert Leinsaar, Triin Ruubel, Linda-Anette Verte, Katariina-Maria Kits, Sandra Klimaitė, Sten Heinoja, Kadri-Ann Sumera, Kalle Randalu, Kristiina Rokashevitch, Kärt Ruubel, ensemble Una Corda, the Estonian National Male Choir, and others.

Theodor Sink plays the cello by Auguste Sébastien Bernardel from 1842, kindly on loan from the Estonian Foundation of Musical Instruments.

In 2017, Theodor Sink was awarded the Annual Prize of the Endowment for Music of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. In 2020, he was named "Artist of the Year" by the Association of the Estonian Professional Musicians.
