Sergei Prohhorov

Sergei Prohhorov was a conductor, composer, bassoonist and pedagogue whose large part of his life’s work was related to the Estonian Radio Symphony Orchestra and who did an admirable work in introducing Estonian music.

Sergei Prohhorov graduated from the Tallinn Conservatoire in composition in the class of Artur Kapp (1934) and in bassoon performance with Andrei Meri (1936). He was a bassoon player (1933–1941) and conductor (1940–1960) of the State Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. He conducted Estonian composers’ works (including premieres), like Eduard Tubin's symphonies V–VII, Artur Kapp's Fourth Symphony, Veljo Tormis’ cantata "Kalevipoeg".

Sergei Prohhorov worked as a teacher of bassoon and theoretical subjects at the Tallinn State Conservatoire (associate professor since 1947) and the Tallinn Music School from 1944 to 1960. He was the conductor of the Leningrad State Academic Maly Opera Theatre (1958–1962), the Petrozavodsk TV and Radio Symphony Orchestra (1963–1966), the Tomsk Philharmonic Orchestra (1966–1967) and the Voronezh Philharmonic Orchestra (1967–1973).
