Riivo Kallasmaa

Riivo Kallasmaa is one of the leading oboists of the Estonian younger generation, a much sought-after soloist and chamber musician.

Riivo Kallasmaa has started oboe studies at the Tallinn Music High School with Tulike Loorits and continued under the guidance of Olev Ainomäe at the Estonian Academy of Music, graduating in 2004. In 2003, he furthered his studies at the Brussel’s Royal Conservatory with Paul Dombrecht and in 2004–2005 at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance under the guidance of Dudu Carmel. In addition, he has participated in various masterclasses with Thomas Indermühle, Han de Vries, et al.

Riivo Kallasmaa has worked as an oboist at the Estonian National Opera Symphony Orchestra (2001–2002), Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (2002–2004) and since 2005, at the Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra. At the present time, Riivo Kallasmaa is an oboist at the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in Finland. In 2003–2004, he was a member of NYYD Ensemble. Since 1999, he has also collaborated with Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Voces Musicales, and as a singer (baritone) with Gregorian chant ensemble Vox Clamantis. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Israel, Finland, etc.

In 1999, he was awarded the second prize in Estonian Youth Woodwind Competition, and in 2003, the prestigious Holland Music Sessions scholarship. In 2006, he became the winner of the Estonian young musicians’ contest-festival Con Brio and he has been awarded the title of Tartu's Young Culture Bearer.
