Premiere of new dance performance with music by Ardo Ran Varres

On February 18, a new dance performance Carrrmen! will be premiered in theatre Vanemuine in Tartu. The music for the dance performance is composed by Ardo Ran Varres, choreographer and director is Ruslan Stepanov. The performance will feature accordionist Jaak Lutsoja, actors Marta Marcelli, Anthony Maloney, Colin Thomas Maggs, Koki Tachibana and the ballet troup of theatre Vanemuine. The light and stage design is made by Patrik Bogårdh (Sweden), the costumes are designed by Mare Tommingas. The preparation time for the dance performance has been lasting almost three years and resulted now with a fantastical and experimenting stage work.

The dance performance is based more on the character of Prosper Merimeé’s Carmen than the story itself. Important is here the personality of Carmen and her emotions.

Composer Ardo Ran Varres: The music for the dance performance Carrrmen! is a bold experiment with sounds of nature, musical instruments and electronics. I use Basque folk instrument txalaparta, accordion, female voice, samplers, virtual instruments and pre-recorded everyday sounds. As musical instruments I also have used things like dust brush, plastic bags, metal coins, crystal bowl etc. All this creates an atmosphere that allows to move freely in landscape of unconsciousness.
