Madis Metsamart

Madis Metsamart is a required percussionist in many chamber ensembles and orchestras as well as a soloist both in Estonia and abroad. Since 2005, he is the concert master of percussion group at the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra.

Madis Metsamart has graduated from the Tallinn Music High School, where he studied percussion instruments under the guidance of Rein Roos. He continued percussion studies with Kalju Terasmaa at the Estonian Academy of Music, graduating in 1994. He has also improved his skills with Andrus Vahu, Lassi Erkkilä, Mark Pekarski, Brian Melvin and Thomas Jimeno.

Madis Metsamart has worked at the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra as a concert master of percussion group in the years 1990–1991 and since 2005. In 1991–2005, he was a member of the Estonian National Opera symphony orchestra. He has given recitals as a soloist and chamber musician in Estonia and abroad, cooperating among the others with Pedro Carneiro, Indrek Vau, Ralf Taal, Tanel Ruben, Virgo Veldi and Robert Jürjendal. Metsamart has also taken part in music projects with piano duo Kai Ratassepp – Mati Mikalai and Tallinn Saxophone Quartet. Later collaboration engages Metsamart with ensemble UMA.

Madis Metsamart has played in several orchestras and ensembles including NYYD Ensemble, Paukenfest Trio, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Tallinn Baroque Orchestra, and Hortus Musicus Academic Orchestra. Metsamart has been the first performer of works by many Estonian composers, including Toivo Tulev, Mirjam Tally, Arvo Pärt, Tõnu Kõrvits, Eino Tamberg, Tauno Aints, René Eespere, Peeter Vähi, and Galina Grigorjeva. He has recorded music by Veljo Tormis, Lepo Sumera, Raimo Kangro and Erkki-Sven Tüür. He has also participated in jazz and pop music projects such as Põhjala saarte hääled (1998), Dave Benton’s Generations (2006), Robert Jürjendal’s album Rõõmu allikas (Unsung Records, 2013), Tõnis Mägi’s Tarkus (Elwood, 2010) and Toivo Tulev’s Songs (Harmonia Mundi, 2008).

Madis Metsamart has had roles at theater plays – he was Musician at Shakespeare's Othello (1994 Rakvere Theatre) and Williams Tomorrow is Not Promised (the Estonian Drama Theater in Von Krahl Theatre, 1996), Songs of Estonian Men (Von Krahl Theatre, 2008). In 1991–2005, Madis Metsamart was a member of the Estonian Theatre Union.

Madis Metsamart has awarded the Annual Prize of the Endowment for Music of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia (2018).
