Ivo Juul

Cellist and cello teacher Ivo Juul graduated from Tallinn 10th Secondary School in 1958 and, in parallel, from Tallinn Music School, where he studied cello with August Karjus and Jaan Reinaste. He continued his cello studies in the class of August Karjus at the Tallinn State Conservatory, which he graduated from in 1963. In 1966, he completed his postgraduate studies under the supervision of Professor Sergei Shirinsky at the Moscow Conservatory. He has won first prize at the Estonian String Players Competition (1969).

Ivo Juul has performed as a soloist with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (including Helmut Rosenvald’s Concerto for Cello and Chamber Orchestra conducted by Vallo Järvi) and given several solo recitals. His ensemble partners have been pianists Riina Gerretz, Aino Himbek, Helin Kapten, Helin Kapten, Jaanus Juul, Ivo Sillamaa, violinist Arvo Leibur (in 2000) and others. Ivo Juul has also been active in various chamber ensembles. He has played in String Quartet with Vladimir Alumäe (violin), Endel Lippus (violin) and Herbert Laan (viola), acclaimed Estonian musicians of the time. For instance, the quartet gave the premiere performance of Arvo Pärt’s String Quartet No. 1. In 1966, he appeared with the Moscow State Philharmonic String Quartet, performing Vissarion Shebalin’s works in different cities of Ukraine. In 1969–1975, he belonged to the String Quartet of the ESSR State Philharmonic, which also gave concerts in Kashastan, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine.

Ivo Juul has been a long-time orchestra member of the Estonian National Opera Symphony Orchestra (1968–2005), holding also the position of the principal cello (1978–2003). He also was a member of several string quartets of the Estonian National Opera.

Ivo Juul has recorded the works by Estonian composers for the record company Melodija (including Rudolf Tobias, Evald Vain, Boris Parsadanian, Helmut Rosenvald). He plays in the album which presents works of composer Mati Kuulberg and participates in the concert film Sings Mati Palm (ETF, 1978), portraying the opera singer bass Mati Palm.

In addition to his concert activities, Ivo Juul has also been a cello teacher. He has worked at the Tallinn State Conservatory (1966–1968 and 1970–1978, students: Evi Olt, Allar Kaasik, Aare Tammesalu, Mati Leibak, Vambo Pikknurm, Lembi Mets, Anu Juul, Margarita Anstal, Paul Purga jun and others) and the Võru Music School in South Estonia (2008–2015).

In 1980, Ivo Juul was given the honorary title of ESSR Honoured Worker in Arts.
