Today, the Japan Art Association will award Arvo Pärt and four other laureates from other art fields with the culture prize „The Praemium Imperiale in Honor of Prince Takamatsu“. The artists are awarded for their achievements, for the impact they have had internationally on the arts, and for their role in enriching the global community. The global arts prize founded in the memory of Prince Takamatsu has been given out by the Japanese imperial family since 1989. Arvo Pärt is the first Estonian who has received the Praemium Imperiale.

Other laureates are Martial Raysse (painting), Giuseppe Penone (sculpture), Steven Holl (arhcitecture), Athol Fugard (theatre/film). The award ceremony takes place on October 15 in Tokyo. Each laureate receives an honorarium of 15 million yen, a diploma and medal.
