IX Nordic Student Singers’ Summit

From April 24 to 27, the IX Nordic Student Singers’ Summit (NSSS) will take place in Tartu. 9 choirs from Estonia, 10 choirs from Sweden, 7 choirs from Norway and 12 choirs from Finland will participate. The festival theme “Me/We” which is presented with a linguistic and visual pair of words Me and We - me means in Estonian we, tries to communicate how identities of nations reflect in each other and how they continuously create new substances.

The program of the festival offers several interesting concerts: traditional opening concert at Tartu Town Hall on April 24, different choir concerts on April 24 and 25 at different concert venues at Tartu old town and gala concert “Sea. Forest. City” at A. Le Coq Sports Hall on April 26. Gala concert features premiere of Maria Kõrvits’s new work Sea. Forest. City for joint choirs and chamber orchestra. This new work, performed by 1400 student singers and string chamber orchestra, combines the melodies which expresses national identity of the choirs in the best way. Artistic director of the concert is Triin Koch, concert is directed by Anne Türnpu.

Additionally, the festival program includes gala dinner for festival participants and workshop for conductors and open are Festival Club and Music Corner which introduces Estonian choir music (selling and listening CD’s, sheet music, brochures etc) and festival choirs’ music.

Since 1987 Nordic and Baltic academic choirs have assembled every third year to a NSSS. The first meeting in modern times was arranged by the student choirs in Linköping, Sweden. It was called Nordiska Studentsångarmötet and was an effort to revive the events from the 19th century when choirs from the old universities crossed through Scandinavia by train or boat to sing with and for each other.
