Estonian Music Information Centre successful at the Frankfurt Musikmesse

From March 21 to 24, team of Estonian Music Information Centre (EMIC) attended the Musikmesse Frankfurt, which, in spite of the economic crisis and generation of new centres of interest, is one of the most important fairs connected with musical instruments and publishing in Europe and world till now. From 2005–2009, EMIC participated in the Musikmesse in the joint stand of Baltic information centres. This year, EMIC performed as an independent organiser, creating direct contacts necessary to distribute Estonian music and deriving inspiring ideas for the future activities.

The axis of EMIC’s concept at the fair was introduction the Estonian music as a consistent and original cultural phenomena – it comprised the „big names“ as well as talented authors of middle and younger generation who have less caught attention. About 1000 people visited the box – representatives of music organisations, musicians, students and hobbyists. EMIC created the contacts nearly with 70 persons from music organisations including representatives of publishers, electronical databases and libraries, associations of interpreters and festivals, and numbers of interpreters who were interested in Estonian music.

Publishers from England, Japan, Germany, Finland, Latvia, Poland and Hungary were interested in new names in Estonian music. Libraries and sheet music sellers from U.S., Germany, Austria, Spain and the Netherlands asked for scores and information about works of Estonian composers. The delegates from Central Conservatory of Music Beijing showed up strong interest in music of Estonia. Conductors, instrumentalists and singers from Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Chile, Czech Republic and from many other countries acquainted themselves with works of Estonian authors at Musikmesse. Many other contacts were made with concert organizers.

The delegates at Musikmesse Frankfurt from Estonian Music Information Centre were Evi Arujärv (director of EMIC) and Mariliis Valkonen (composer, editor at EMIC) and Anu Schaper – German based Estonian musicologist and a PhD student at the Freiburg University. The participation of Musikmesse Frankfurt were made possible by support of the Estonian Ministry of Culture and the Estonian Music Development Centre.
