The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre will start its centennial festival



This season the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre celebrates its centennial, which coincides with the opening of the long-awaited new concert hall of the Academy. The EAMT will be commencing its centennial celebrations with a festival of concerts, performances, and much more from September 28 to October 2.

The centennial festival starts with the opening ceremony at the new concert hall on September 28. The ceremony will feature the EAMT symphony orchestra and choir with Arvo Volmer conducting, in a programme including music by Arvo Pärt, Heino Eller, Eino Tamberg and the world premiere of „Ta kõneleb vaikselt“ for choir and symphony orchestra by Tõnu Kõrvits.

Many concerts and performances will follow over the next days, presenting classical, jazz and folk music, chamber music concerts, opera, and drama performances, which will highlight the wide range of musical and theatrical activities of the Academy.

The festive concert on September 29 features the students and professor of EAMT including Nadia Kurem (soprano), Juhan Tralla (tenor), Toomas Vavilov (clarinet), Peeter Sarapuu (bassoon), Kalervo Kulmala (horn), Indrek Vau (trumpet), Mari Poll (violin), Triin Ruubel (violin), Johanna Vahermägi (viola), Henry-David Varema (cello), Ivari Ilja (piano), Peep Lassmann (piano), Mihkel Poll (piano), Age Juurikas (piano). The programme presents works by Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Milhaud, Mascagni, Eller, Saar, Mägi, and Tamberg, among others.

The Opera in Concert on September 30 presents the excerpts from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s „The Marriage of Figaro“ („Le Nozze di Figaro“), performed by the vocal students EAMT and the chamber orchestra formed by students, former students, and the professors.

On October 1, the International Music Day gala and Music Awards ceremony, presented by the Estonian Music Council, takes place in collaboration with the EAMT at the new concert hall. It will feature winners of this year's music awards together with the EAMT Sinfonietta and conductor Kaspar Mänd.

The EAMT, founded in 1919, is the only university of music and drama in Estonia, offering higher education in all major fields of music and theatre through bachelor, master and doctoral programmes.
