Birgitta Festival 2014

From August 8 to 17, Birgitta Festival will take place in the ruins of the convent of St. Bridget, Tallinn. This year the festival celibrates its 10th and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra’s 20th anniversary, also festival’s artistic director maestro Eri Klas’s 75th birthday. The program of the festival offers different productions.

On August 8 at 7 pm, Leonrad Berstein’s theatre piece Mass for singers, players and dancers will be held in cooperation with State Choir Latvija. It will be performed by Douglas Webster (USA), Koit Toome, Kristel Pärtna (Estonian National Opera), Denise Fontoura, Karl Sander Saarik, Laura Grecka (Latvia), Jānis Apeinis (Latvia), Jānis Aišpurs (Latvia) and Jolanta Stikaite (Latvia), State Choir Latvija, Riga Dome Church Boys’ Choir, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and ensemble (Siim Aimla, Danel Aljo, Madis Kari, Kaarel Liiv, Paul Daniel, Martin Matt, Holger Marjamaa, Markus Lattikas, Hele-Riin Uib) under the guidance of Māris Sirmais (Latvia), directed by Susanna Tsirjuk (Russia).

On August 10 at 7 pm, Aram Khachaturian’s ballet Spartacus will be performed by St. Peterburg State Academic Theatre named after Leonid Yacobson (stage director and choreographer: Leonid Yacobson). On August 14 and 15 at 7 pm, two opera performances can be seen – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio by opera theater Biel Solothurn from Switzerland (directed by Georg Rootering (Liechtenstein), conducted by Risto Joost) and Giuseppe Verdi’s A Masked Ball by opera theatre Helikon from Moscow (directed by Dmitry Bertman).

On August 16 and 17 at 7 pm, gala concert in honor of the 75th jubilee of maestro Eri Klas will take place. A spirited evening of opera music, with beloved arias and ensembles alternating with video clips of the maestro’s life and excerpts of Birgitta Festival productions throughout the years will feature Heli Veskus (Estonian National Opera), Marion Elvilä (Finland), Rauno Elp (Estonian National Opera), Priit Volmer (Bonni ooperiteater), Oliver Kuusik (Estonian National Opera), soloists from opera theatre Helikon and  guests. Gala concert is directed by Dmitry Bertman, conducted by Eri Klas and Valery Kiryanov.
