Composer Ülo Krigul received reputable Prince Pierre Foundation prize “Young Musicians Favorite Choice” for “Swan Bone City” for soprano and symphony orchestra. It was handed over at Opéra de Monte-Carlo on September 30.

The Prince Pierre Foundation was established in 1966 by HSH Prince Rainier III, in homage to the memory of his father, Prince Pierre, a great patron of literature and the arts. The aim of the Prince Pierre Foundation is to encourage contemporary creative work.  Each year, it awards a literary prize, a musical prize and an art prize. There are two musical prizes – The Musical Composition Prize will be awarded every three years (in 2006, Helena Tulve was awarded) and The Young Musicians Favorite Choice, founded in 2011, rewards each year a recent piece of music.

In past years, Raminta Serksnyte, Kaija Saariaho and Toshio Hosokawa were awarded The Young Musicians Favorite Choice. This prize is selected by the students of the Academy of Music and Theatre in Monaco.

Krigul’s “Swan Bone City” was premiered by Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and Iirs (vocals) in 2012 at Estonian Music Days Festival. In 2013, it was awarded the Composer Prize at the Estonian Music Days Festival.
