Premiere of new opera “Icarus” by Evelin Seppar

On June 22, brand new opera Icarus by Evelin Seppar will receive its world premiere at Amsterdam Conservatory. The opera retells the ancient Greek myth of Icarus and Daedalus trying to escape their prison island by building wings and flying towards freedom. The leading roles will be sung by mezzo-soprano Mari Askvik as Icarus and Philip Barkhudarov as Daedalus with a vocal and instrumental ensemble from Amsterdam Conservatory, conducted by Lodewijk van der Ree. Icarus is staged by Ingrid Askvik.

Evelin Seppar has written for solo instruments, various ensembles, solo voice, orchestra and electronics and made different arrangements. She has foremost caught attention as an author of choral music. Psalm of David No. 88 received a special prize at the composition competition organised by Estonian Composers’ Union and Pirita Monastery in 2010. "Brother in Trouble" won the main prize at the competition of choral songs and arrangements in Võro language 2011. "Sonnet No. 53" was on the program of the new music festival Arēna in Latvia in 2012. Her most extensive work so far is the opera Teine that was premiered in Tallinn St. Nicholas’s Church in February 2012.
