Chamber opera „It Is Getting so Dark“ by Helena Tulve to be performed

From February 21 to 22, Helena Tulve’s chamber opera It Is Getting so Dark (directed by Reeda Toots) will be performed again. Three performances will be staged at Kadriorg Palace. Tulve’s chamber opera is based on Sei Shônagon’s (c 966–1017/1025) work The Pillow Book (translated in English by Ian Morris). Sei Shônagon was a Japanese author and a court lady who served the Empress Teishi (Sadako) around the year 1000 during the middle Heian period. The Pillow Book is a collection of lists, gossip, poetry, observations and complaints written during her years in the court.

Helena Tulve’s It Is Getting so Dark for female voices and instrumental ensemble (flute, corno, percussion, viola, double bass, harp), composed in 2004 was commisioned by Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. Chamber opera, directed by Reeda Toots will be performed by 14 female singers and instrumentalists Mari Aasa (viola), Eda Peäske (harp), Maarja Nuut (percussion), Marion Aruvee (flute), Vigo Uusmäe (corno) and Tiit Pärtna (double bass). Costume designer is Iir Hermeliin, decorations by Laura Verte and light designer is Emil Kallas.

Three performances will take place on February 21 at 7 pm and February 22 at 6 pm and 9 pm at Kadriorg Palace.
