The first performance of Tubin’s full Piano Sonata No. 1 in Tallinn

On October 4, pianist Marko Martin will perform for the first time in Tallinn the full version of Piano Sonata No. 1 (ETW 31) by Eduard Tubin. The concert is held at the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum at 17.

Eduard Tubin’s 1st piano sonata is described as extremely wide-ranging and technically highly demanding work for a pianist. Eduard Tubin wrote this work at the age of 23, at the time he was studying at the Tartu Higher Music School as a student of Heine Eller. The duration of sonata is ~30 minutes and the key E major.

Movements:

1. Sonata-allegro. Moderato con espressio
2. Scherzo. Presto
3. Andante mesto, con passione

The work as a whole was unperformed until September 27, 2012, when Marko Martin played it in Tartu City Museum for the very first time. The next performances will take place on October 4 at the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum in Tallinn, on October 6 in Alatskivi castle and on October 16 in Kuressaare Music School.

Tubin has totally composed two sonatas for piano. His Piano Sonata No. 2 „Northern Lights“ was completed in 1950 in Sweden.
