Inaugural concerts of Mägi Ensemble


This weekend, Mägi Ensemble from USA will give its first concerts in Edmonds and Seattle. Named for the “First Lady of Estonian Music”, Ester Mägi, the core ensemble is a group of six talented singers, University of Washington Chamber Singers alumni, expanding to include also instrumental pieces. The Mägi Ensemble works to perform and record compositions from the Baltic region.

The focus on Baltic music stems from the acitivity of ensemble’s artistic director Heather MacLaughlin Garbes who was asked to help organize the collection of UW Baltic Choral Library. This library, the first of it’s kind in the United States, consists of over 1000 pieces, including woks by ca 60 Estonian composers. Heather MacLaughlin Garbes received her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at the University of Washington for the research on Ester Mägi’s choral music.

Inaugural concerts of The Mägi Ensemble will take place on September 8 in Maplewood Presbyterian Church, Edmonds and September 9 in Thomsen Chapel at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle. The Mägi Ensemble will participae in the upcoming 2013 UW Choirs Tour and performance at the Latvian National Song Festival.
