The performance of Erkki-Sven Tüür’s Cello Concerto in St. Petersburg

Last week, Erkki-Sven Tüür’s Cello Concerto (1996) could have been listened at the final concert of the V Festival of Contemporary Music New Horizons in St. Petersburg. Within the program entitled Three celli plus… three cellists together with Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra performed their favourite concertos. Gavriel Lipkind performed the solo part in Witold Lutosławski’s Cello Concerto, Nikolai Korndorf’s Cello Concerto was presented by Alexander Ivashkin. Tüür’s Cello Concerto was chosen by Ivan Monighetti, who says that when he plays this work it seems to be the most magical piece of music he has ever performed.

In addition to works mentioned above, the world premiere of Alexander Raskatov’s Three Angels Sang for three celli, three child singers and orchestra took place. Also Boris Tishchenko’s Cello Concerto No. 2 (Concerto for Solo Cello, Forty-Eight Celli, Twelve Double Basses and Percussion) with Alexander Buzlov as a soloist was in the program.

Concert took place on June 7 in Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, orchestra was conducted by Valery Gergiev.
