Talents at Home. Risto Joost

The next concert in Tallinn Philharmonic Society’s concert series Talents at Home will take place on December 20 at 7 pm in Tallinn Blackheads Guildhall. The concert features Risto Joost, talented Estonian musician who will perform in the concert as a singer and conductor.
Under his conducting Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, violinists Arvo Leibur, Harry Traksmann and Elo Tepp, cellist Leho Karin and and Reinut Tepp on harpsichord will perform music by A. Vivaldi and A. Corelli. Also a new piece by Tõnu Kõrvits, Nocturnes for voice and strings will be premiered.

Risto Joost (1980) started his music studies at the Tallinn Music High School and continued at the Estonian Academy of Music with Professors Kuno Areng, Jüri Alperten and Paul Mägi, studying additionally singing with Uku Joller and Nadja Kurem. He received further training at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna in Erwin Ortner and Leopold Hager’s class. In spring 2008 Risto Joost graduated from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm majoring in orchestral conducting with Prof Jorma Panula.

Risto Joost has been conducting most of actively working orchestras in Estonia and a number of famous music collectives abroad: Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Mixed chorus Latvija, Swedish Radio Choir and Ars Nova Copenhagen. Risto Joost has held the position of the principal conductor of the Tallinn Music High School Symphony Orchestra, the conductor of Estonian National Opera and chief chorus master of the Opera Choir. In the season of 2011/2012 Risto Joost will be the principal conductor of the Netherlands Chamber Choir. As a singer, Risto Joost has sung in Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, vocal ensembles Vox Clamantis and Theatre of Voices.

Risto Joost is the founder of chamber choir and ensemble Voces Musicales which are focused on performing baroque and contemporary music.

As a conductor, Risto Joost has achieved several prizes – in Budapest 2001, and Tallinn 2002 and 2004. He has twice received a Gustav Ernesaks Scholarship for developing choral activities in Estonia. He got the Honorable Title of Young Conductor 2004 from Estonian Choral Society, the Annual Prize of the Endowment for Music of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia in 2007 and Young Cultural Figure Award of the Cultural Foundation of the President in 2011.

The concert series Talents at Home of the Tallinn Philharmonic Society introduces young talented musicians who began their studies in Estonia but are currently studying or working abroad. The first concert in the series took place in January 2011 with violinst Kaija Lukas and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, also violinist Mari Poll has performed in the series and in January 2012, oboist Kalev Kuljus will have a concert.
