Music of Tõnu Kõrvits and Arvo Pärt in the program of Capital of Culture Turku

On December 7 at 7.30 pm, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir together with Finnish orchestra Musicians of the King’s Road will give a concert in St. Michael’s Church in Turku, Finland. Under the baton of Tõnu Kaljuste, Estonian music will be performed: choral cycle based on Estonian sacred folk songs Kreek’s Notebook by Tõnu Kõrvits and 2 Lullabies and Adam’s Lament (Finnish premiere) by Arvo Pärt. Adam’s Lament for mixed choir and chamber orchestra is the commission of European Capital of Culture Istanbul 2010 and European Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011. It’s premiere was conducted also by Kaljuste in Hagia Eirene Museum, Istanbul, in June 2010.

The Musicians of the King’s Road is a professional orchestra that was founded in autumn 2008. The orchestra is giving concerts in co-operation with towns, municipalities, parishes and other cultural promoters in Finland. For centuries, the King’s Road served as a postal route between Bergen and St. Petersburg and was used also by travelling royals, scholars and artists. The performing ensemble consists of musicians and singers living along this historical route.

Concert belongs to the program of European Capital of Culture Turku 2011. Both composers - Tõnu Kõrvits and Arvo Pärt as the guest of honour will be at the concert.
