Estonian music is a main theme at the Nostalgia Festival in Poland

Festival Nostalgia that will take place from December 3 to 5 in Poznań, features Estonian music that, according to organisers, is one of the most interesting and acclaimed phenomena in contemporary chamber music. Using a unique sensuality of sound the pieces seem as if they have not been composed, but, were just happening. Perhaps this is rooted in Estonia’s geographical location, or in its language (even to us, Slavic language users, a Finno-Ugric language is ‘magical’), or, perhaps, in its history (the national awakening and revival in early 20th century) or maybe in all of these factors. What is certain, however, is the fact that Estonia’s music resonates with NOSTALGIA. Festival’s second theme is Bach, whose music is reviving with every subsequent performance.

Events dedicated to Estonian music in Aula Artis Concert Hall:
On December 4, Marianne Kõrver’s documentary of Erkki-Sven Tüür 7 Etudes in Pictures will be screened and one of Urmas Sisask’s most popular work, choral cycle Gloria Patri will be performed by Amu Chamber Choir under the direction of Krzysztof Szydzisz. Also panel discussion on styles in Estonian music will take place, where Polish musicologist Andrzej Chłopeck will hold a conversation with Erkki-Sven Tüür and Helena Tulve.
On December 5, Roman Baskin’s feature film Rahu tänav will be shown. At the final concert, Erkki-Sven Tüür’s vocal-symphonic piece Awakening (2011) and Symphony No. 8 (2010) will be performed together with Helena Tulve’s à travers for instrumental ensemble, awarded at the International Rostrum of Composers in Paris. The performers are Polish chamber orchestra Aukso and chamber choir of Adam Mickiewicz University under the baton of Marek Moś.

Since Thursday, Estonian music channel – pieces composed by Urmas Sisask, Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Galina Grigorjeva, Helena Tulve, Veljo Tormis, Mirjam Tally and many others – can be listened at certain times from cordless headphones at different places in Poznan.
