II Tallinn International Piano Competition begins

From November 9 to 18, fifty two young pianists from all over the world will meet in the European Capital of Culture 2011 to take part in the 2nd Tallinn International Piano Competition. The competition will be held in three rounds, the finalists will have the opportunity to perform with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mikk Murdvee. All the participants are required to play pieces by Estonian composers Mart Saar, Lepo Sumera and Arvo Pärt.

The members of the jury are Tigran Alikhanov from Russia, Yang Ming from China, John O’Conor from Ireland, Erik Tawaststjerna from Finland and Peep Lassmann from Estonia. The 1st Tallinn International Piano Competition was held in 2006. The first prize was given to Mihkel Poll (Estonia) who also received the special prize. Gang Sun (China) won the second prize and Sten Lassmann (Estonia) and Daniil Sayamov (Russia) were given the third prize.
The competition is presented by Tallinn European Capital of Culture 2011 and is organized by the Estonian Piano teachers’ Association and Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.
