Composer and organist, Helen Tobias-Duesberg (1919-2010), the youngest daughter of Estonian classical composer Rudolf Tobias, was born in New York but spent her childhood and youth years in Estonia. She obtained musical education on organ and composition in Estonia, Germany and US. From 1951, she worked in US as organist, music teacher and composer.
Helen Tobias-Duesberg has written numerous works for coir and chamber music for classical ensembles, i.e. string quartets, piano trios, wind quintets, as well as works for piano and organ. She also has made redactions and arrangemets of her father’s works. Her music can be described as nordically crisp and restrained by its expressions. Apart of some influences from neo-classical style, her music unfolds its main source of inspiration – Estonian folk and children songs and sacred folk tunes.
