Urmas Sisask’s composer recital

On October 22 at 6 pm, Urmas Sisask’s composer recital will take place in Culture Centre Lindakivi, Tallinn. Concert belongs to the series A Composer in Residence for Every District in Tallinn that is Estonian Composers’ Union’s contribution to the program of European Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011. Urmas Sisask’s choral music but as well as pop music will be performed by Lea Liitmaa (vocal), Maria Šugailo (soprano), Igor Jermakov (Russian concertina), Ensemble Karavan and Mixed Choir of European Capital of Culture under the direction of Veronika Portsmuth. Program includes also a premiere of “Koolide regilaul ja hümn”, op. 137 [Folk Song and Hymn of Schools] on Villu Kangur’s text.

Composer captivated of astronomy, Estonian folk song and shamanism has written music rich of styles and genres – it is varying from sacred music to popular and even rap-like songs. Sisask has composed numerous works for piano, small- and large-scale choral works, chamber music, orchestral works. Sisask has gained world-wide popularity foremost with his sacred choral music with simple harmony and beautiful melodies.

Urmas Sisask (1960) has graduated from Tallinn State Conservatory in composition under René Eespere in 1985. Since 1994, he is active in Musical Obervatory Tower in Jäneda manor building, where Sisask additionally opened a self-made planetarium. There he continuously makes astronomical observations, organizes lecture-concerts and composes majoruty of his music – the basis of many of his works are mathematical descriptions of planets’ movements. For his work he recently was ascribed the title of Musician of the Year of Estonian Radio (2010) and Annual Prize of the Culture Endowment of Estonia (2010).
