New CD with contemporary solo and chamber music for Estonian kannel

In March, new CD of ensemble Resonabilis has been released. The central instrument of that CD is Estonian chromatic kannel, which due to its possibilities in terms of sound and manipulation, has awakened interest among many composers. This current CD comprises mainly Estonian composers’ solo and chamber music for kannel composed in last 10 years.

CD presents Silmaja by Helena Tulve, Changeable by Tatjana Kozlova, Magic Lake by Margo Kõlar, Recitative by Age Hirv, Sappho’s fragments by Märt-Matis Lill, Die Ernste Wandlungen by Ülo Krigul, …notae… No. 4 and 9 by Kristjan Kõrver and Allusion fragments by Finnish composer Antti Auvinen.

The ensemble Resonabilis (Iris Oja – voice, Kristi Mühling – kannel, Tarmo Johannes – flute and Aare Tammesalu – cello) with unique selection of instruments was founded in 2002 by Tarmo Johannes and Kristi Mühling of Estonian renowned contemporary music performers. Composers from Estonia and abroad have written for Resonabilis to create a new repertoire: Margo Kõlar, Tatjana Kozlova, Kristjan Kõrver, Age Hirv, Märt-Matis Lill, Malle Maltis, Daan Manneke (Netherlands), Antti Auvinen (Finland), Santa Ratniece (Latvia), David Helbich (Germany). One of the important aims for the ensemble is to perform such pieces of Western contemporary classics that are not often played in Estonian concert halls. Resonabilis has perfomed both in Estonia and abroad (Germany, Latvia, Iran and elswhere).
