Bruno Lukk

On June 30, 100 years have passed since the birth of pianist and pedagogue Bruno Lukk (1909–1991). Lukk dedicated his life to music and to his students. Estonian pianism would not be the same without Bruno Lukk.
On June 30 at 4 pm, flowers will be placed to Lukk’s grave at Metsakalmistu and at 5 pm, his students and admirers of his art are expected to attend the memorial evening of Lukk in the café of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.
More jubilee events (exhibition about Lukk, memorial book, conference etc.) will take place on October 24, organized by the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

Bruno Lukk began his musical studies with his sister Gerda and continued at the Tartu Music School with Martha Bäthge. In 1928, Lukk graduated from the Riga Conservatoire and in 1928–1933, he studied piano with Leonid Kreutzer and music theory with Paul Hindemith at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin.
Bruno Lukk made his debut as a soloist in 1931 at the concert hall of Riga Conservatoire. His first solo performance in Estonia took place also in 1931. Lukk was highly valued as an Estonian music performer (Mart Saar, Heino Eller, Arvo Pärt et al.). Besides being a remarkable soloist, Lukk was a well-known ensemble partner. His collaboration with pianist Anna Klas lasted for more than 40 years. In every season, duo Klas-Lukk gave eight to twelve concerts, they performed classical music as well as contemporary music. Bruno Lukk also performed with cellist Peeter Paemurru, violinist Mari Tampere, singer Ludmilla Dombrovskaja et al.
In 1939–1941, Lukk worked as a pedagogue at the Tartu Music School and from 1940 till his death in 1991, he worked at the Tallinn Conservatoire. The list of his students include Mall Sarv, Erna Saar, Vaike Vahi, Leelo Kõlar, Riina Gerretz, Arbo Valdma, Matti Reimann, Toivo Nahkur, Kalle Randalu, Ivo Sillamaa, Lembit Orgse, Lauri Väinmaa, Toomas Vana, Mati Mikalai et al.
