Pärnu Contemporary Music Days

From January 9 to 13, Pärnu Contemporary Music Days + Printmarking in 2010 will take place in Pärnu. The music days, initiated in 1988, connects different forms of art, philosophy and literature theory and practice – it offers concerts, performances, lectures, discussions and exhibitions.

On January 9, the opening ceremony of the festival will be held at Pärnu Art Hall where awards for writing articles about contemporary music for the free encyclopedia Vikipeedia will be given out. Several exhibitions of works by Dernier Cri, KutiKuti, Eduard Viiralt, Kursi School, Toomas Kuusing and Association of the Estonian Printmakers and many others will be opened at Pärnu Art Hall, Pärnu Museum, Pärnu Endla Theatre, Artists’ House of Pärnu and elsewhere.

Melodrama Pierrot Lunaire by Arnold Schoenberg will be performed under the guidance of Andrus Kallastu by Repoo Ensemble (Kai Kallastu – vocal, Monika Mattiesen – flute, Tarmo Pajusaar – clarinet, Anna Zielinska – violin/viola, Poland, Aare Tammesalu – cello, Jorma Toots – piano) on January 9 in Pärnu, January 10 in Tallinn and January 11 in Riga, Latvia. Melodrama is directed by Teet Kask, costume designer is Pille Neeve, objects by Marko Mäetamm.

From January 22 to 24, symposium Scholasticism. Brian Ferneyhough will take place at Artists’ House of Pärnu. Musicologists, philosophers and theologians from Estonia and abroad will discuss about scholasticism on the example of the compositional techniques of English composer Brian Ferneyhough.

Also the multimedia workshops Dimensions II will be held for the third time through the whole music days. Workshops will be lead by Hans-Gunter Lock and Andrus Kallastu. Pärnu Contemporary Music Days + Printmarking in 2010 will come to an end on January 30 at Pärnu Old Town School where experimental vocal project Woman will be performed.

The festival is organised by the Estonian Arnold Schoenberg Association and the Pärnu Concert Agency, its artistic director is Märt-Matis Lill.
