Premieres of works by Kristo Matson in Tallinn and Tartu

On March 11 and 18, ensemble Trio Unique (Andreas Aben – clarinets, Laur Joamets – guitars, Petri Piiparinen – percussions) will give the world premiere performances of two pieces by Kristo Matson in Tallinn and Tartu – brand new R.E.M. for bass clarinet, baritone guitar and percussion (2010) and earlier composed Waiting for percussion (2003/2006).

Besides the premieres of Matson’s pieces, the program also includes the works by other Estonian composers and one English composer, arranged by Kristo Matson – Tõnu Kõrvits’s The Source (setting for clarinet and vibraphone), Raimo Kangro’s Display V: Portrait of Angel, Op. 42 (setting for clarinet, electric guitar and percussions) and Joseph Horovitz’s Sonatine, 2nd and 3rd movement (setting for clarinet, electric guitar and percussion), also Wall of the Hansa Town for acoustic guitar by Priit Pihlap will be performed.

Concerts starting at 7 pm will take place on March 11 at Estonian National Opera Winter Garden and March 18 at Tartu City Museum.

Kristo Matson has studied composition in Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with Tõnu Kõrvits and Helena Tulve. Matson’s Cantus In Memoriam Malera Kasuku for symphony orchestra got the special prize at the International Lepo Sumera Composition Contest For Young Composers 2006. Matson’s works have been performed by Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Pärnu City Orchestra, Tartu String Quartet, violinist Urmas Vulp, cellist Aare Tammesalu, pianist Lea Leiten and others. His music has been presented at Estonian Music Days Festival, Estonian Young Composers’ Festival and Autumn Festival of the Estonian Academy of Music. Matson is also known as an arranger and pop musician.
