Estonian National Symphony Orchestra's final concert of the season

 

Today, on May 14, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nikolai Aleksejev, will give its last concert of the season at Estonia Concert Hall in Tallinn. This concert will also mark the end of Aleksejev’s tenure as chief conductor of the orchestra. The program consists of the works by Russian composers: Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major and Sergey Rachmaninoff’s choral symphony The Bells, Op. 35. Estonian National Orchestra will feature violinist David Grimal (France), soprano Irina Dubrovskaja (Russia/Italy), tenor Evgeny Akimov (Russia), baritone Atlan Karp, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Latvian Radio Choir.

After completing the St. Petersburg Conservatory (under the guidance of Arvīd and Maris Jansons), Nikolai Aleksejev worked with the Maria Theatre in St. Petersburg, and as conductor of the Ulyanovsk Philharmonic Orchestra and the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. He has directed the leading symphony orchestras in Moscow as well as in St. Petersburg, and has given concerts in Europe, the United States and Japan. Nikolai Aleksejev is also principal conductor and artistic director of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, an associate director with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and in the season 2002/2003 he was the principal guest conductor of Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. While Aleksejev’s first experience with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra was as a guest conductor in 1983, the relationship has become a much closer one since 1995. Nikolai Aleksejev served as the chief conductor of Estonian National Symphony Orchestra for nine years.

Estonian Republic has awarded him the Third Class Order of the White Star (2006) and Estonian State Cultural Award (2010) for his outstanding work with Estonian National Symphony Orchestra.
