Juhan Simm

On August 12, 125 years have passed since the birth of composer and conductor Juhan Simm (1885–1959). Simm was remarkable figure on Tartu’s music scene in the first half of previous century: he was active as a conductor by Vanemuine Theatre, pedagogue in Tartu Music School, he founded male choirs and was general leader of national song celebrations. The body of his oeuvre is formed by choral music, best known are “Own island” and “To Mulgimaa”.

Juhan Simm’s memorial day will be celebrated on August 12 in the garden of Tartu Oskar Luts Home Museum (Riia St. 38) at 5 pm. At the concert dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Simm there will perform Tartu Academic Male Choir and Tartu Male Choir of Estonian Male Song Society (both founded by Juhan Simm) under the guidance of Alo Ritsing and Mixed Choir of Vanemuine Society. Paper on Juhan Simm’s life will be read by Vivian Tordik, memories about teacher and colleague will be shared by Uno Uiga and Kalle Loona. Also an exhibition of legendary conductor and composer can be seen. After the concert and paper, there will be joint visit to Raadi cemetery to light candles on the grave of Juhan Simm.

Concert dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Juhan Simm will take place also on August 14 at 2 pm in Tarvastu Church where Tartu Academic Male Choir, male choir Sakala from Viljandi, Tarvastu Choir and Tarvastu Mixed Choir Üits Viis will perform.
