The catastrophe occurred on September 28 in1994, as the ship was crossing the Baltic Sea, en route from Tallinn (Estonia), to Stockholm (Sweden). It claimed 852 lives out of 989 passengers on board and was one of the deadliest maritime disasters of the late 20th century.
