Estonian National Opera will celebrate the anniversaries of Anu Kaal and Urve Tauts with opera “La traviata”

On November 4, Estonian National Opera will celebrate its long-standing soloists soprano Anu Kaal’s 70th and mezzo soprano Urve Tauts’s 75th anniversary with Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La traviata performance at 7 pm. The leading role of the courtesan Violetta will be sung by soprano Kädy Plaas and the role of Alfredo by tenor Gregory Warren (Berlin Deutsche Oper).


Anu Kaal

Anu Kaal graduated from the Tallinn State Conservatory in singing with Ludmilla Issakova in 1968 and improved her skills in Milano La Scala singing school under the supervision of Renata Carosio and Enza Ferrari in 1971–1972. Kaal began her opera career as a member of the Estonian National Opera chorus in 1963, in 1967–1996, she was highly valued soloist of the theatre. Her repertoire consists of large amount opera roles such as Queen of the Night (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Die Zauberflöte), Gilda (Giuseppe Verdi Rigoletto), Lucia (Gaetano Donizetti Lucia di Lammermoor), Konstanze (Mozart Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Violetta (Verdi La traviata), Roxane (Eino Tamberg Cyrano de Bergerac), Maria (Donizetti La figlia del reggimento), Oscar (Verdi Ballo in Maschera) and many others.

Anu Kaal has also performed as chamber singer and soloist in different large-scale works. Concert tours have taken her to Bulgaria, Iceland, Japan, Canada, France, Finland and elsewhere.

 

Urve Tauts graduated from the Tallinn State Conservatory in singing with Alice Roolaid in 1963. In 1955–1960, she sang in the Estonian National Opera chorus and became a soloist of the theatre in 1961 where she remained one of the leading mezzos until 2001. Her repertoire consists over 70 opera roles including Carmen (Georges Bizet Carmen), Amneris (Giuseppe Verdi Aida), Azucena (Verdi Il trovatore), Maddalena (Verdi Rigoletto), Eboli (Verdi Don Carlo), Flora (Verdi La traviata), Herodias (Richard Strauss Salome).


Urve Tauts

Urve Tauts was also highly valued as chamber singer and soloist of the large-scale works. She has performed in Italy, France, Germany, USA, Scandinavia, Hungary, Poland, Syria and elsewhere.
