Heino Kaljuste

November 18 will mark the 85th birth anniversary of Estonian choral conductor, pedagogue and educationalist Heino Kaljuste. It will be commemorated with museum evening at the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum and school music days organised by the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

On November 17, the museum evening Heino Kaljuste – Teacher of Teachers will be held at the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum at 4 pm. Memories of Heino Kaljuste will be shared by his former colleagues and students Tiia-Ester Loitme, Venno Laul, Ene Kangron, Kadi Härma, Katrin Ehala and Tõnu Kaljuste.

The music will be performed by Mari Targo (violin) and the students of the Tallinn English College. Also an exhibition of the materials from Kaljuste’s archive will be opened.

From November 18 to 19, the school music days – In memoriam Heino Kaljuste 85, organised by the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre will take place in Tallinn and Narva. School music days will offer several papers, workshops, opening the memorial tablet and concerts.

Heino Kaljuste (18.11.1925–28.07.1989) was known above all as the founder of children’s choir Ellerhein and introducer and promoter of the system of relative solfeggio by Zoltán Kodály in Estonia. Kaljuste founded Ellerhein in 1951 and acted as its conductor until his death. The choir won many prizes at the choral competitions, performed both in Estonia and abroad and recorded music for Estonian Radio and several discs. In 1966, Kaljuste formed the chamber choir Ellerhein on the 15th anniversary of the children’s choir Ellerhein, which later became known as Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. Heino Kaljuste has also conducted the choirs at Estonian Song Celebrations, published articles about choral and school music, compiled tutoral books in singing and composed choral music.
