World premiere of Urmas Sisask’s new work by Grieg Pianoduo in the Netherlands

On Friday, September 18, at the Groningen concert house De Oosterpoort Urmas Sisask’s piano work The Sombrero Galaxy, op. 119 for four hands will be world premiered by Groningen Grieg Pianoduo. In addition to the new work, also Franz Schubert’s Lebensstürme and Sisask’s Spiral Symphony will be performed in the concert. The performed music will be featured by the large screen projection of the cosmic pictures and comments will be given by the University of Groningen Kapteyn Institute astronomy professor Peter Barthel, who has made successful cooperations with the piano duo many times before.

In 2000, using an 8 meters long telescope, Peter Barthel and his colleague Mark Neeser succeeded to capture in Chile excellent photographs of Sombrero galaxy. The image, which has been successfully issued as a poster, also inspired Urmas Sisask to compose music.

Grieg Pianoduo concert Keys to the Stars will be held in the framwork of the United Nations proclaimed International Year of Astronomy 2009. The commissioned work of Sombrero Galaxy (2008) by Sisask was also prepared specially for this event and is dedicated to astronomer Peter Barthel and Grieg Pianoduo pianists Elles van der Heiden and Siebert Nix. Recently, the piano duo released a cosmic music CD, which also includes Sisask’s works The Milky Way Galaxy and Spiral Symphony.
