The laureates of the Estonian Music Council Awards and the Estonain Cultural Endowment Annual Music Awards 2009 selected



On the International Music Day, October 1, 12 annual music awards for excellent work during the season 2008-2009 were given at the Tallinn St. Nicholas Museum/Concert Hall. The Estonian Music Council and the Estonain Cultural Endowment have been giving annual awards since 1995.


Estonian Music Council Awards 2009:

The Composition Prize was awarded to Veljo Tormis, who through his music has given a new breath to Estonian and Estonian kindred peoples’ heritage.

The laureate of Interpretation Award was conductor Eri Klas for the decades of outstanding work.

The prize for distinguished and important activities in Estonian music life was given to the legendary teacher of major Estonian cellists’ school – Laine Leichter.


The Annual Music Awards 2008/2009 of Estonian Cultural Endowment:

Urmas Vulp – for the promotion of Estonian string music
Raili Sule – for long and distinguished work as pedagogue
Ensemble U: – for the promotion of new music and releasing CD "U:"
Tõnis Kõrvits – for the arrangements for Song Festival
Toomas Rull – for outstanding activities as interpreter, author and teacher, and issuing the first Estonian study book for percussion
Mirjam Tally – for a bright year of musical creation
Marje Lohuaru – for diverse and outstanding activities as interpreter and for evolving of Estonian music life
Ain Agan, Aleksei Saks – for the series "Estonian Improvisations"
Creative collective of documentary "Laulutaadi hümnid" – for recording a memory of Gustav Ernesaks
