Memorial Day of Bruno Lukk

On October 24, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT) with the Estonian Piano Teachers Association will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Estonian pianist and pedagogue professor Bruno Lukk at the EAMT. The Memorial Day of Lukk offers conference, exhibition, new book and CD presentation and concert. Lukk dedicated his life to music and his students. Estonian pianism would not be the same without Bruno Lukk.

At 10.30 am, the First Bruno Lukk Conference will take place at the EAMT Chamber Hall, papers will be read by musicologist Tiia Järg and pianists Age Juurikas, Lembit Orgse, Mart Ernesaks, Toivo Nahkur and Arbo Valdma.

Afternoon, the exhibition Bruno Lukk 100 (compiled by Anu Paulus and Agnes Toomla) will be opened at the lobby of the EAMT caffe. At 4 pm, presentation of the book about Bruno Lukk (edited by Maia Lilje) and CD „Bruno Lukk. Estonian piano music“ will take place at the chamber hall. At 6 pm, Lukk’s former students Lembit Orgse, Imbi Tarum, Jüri Alperten, Irene Lindi, Olga Tambre, Helin Kapten, Lauri Väinmaa, Martti Raide, Enn Kivilo, Leelo Kõlar, Evi Ross, Mati Mikalai, Mart Ernesaks, Toomas Vana and Kalle Randalu will perform at the concert Bruno Lukk 100 in the series of Juiblate at the chamber hall. The concert will be broadcasted by Estonian radio of classical music Klassikaraadio.

Bruno Lukk (1909–1991) began his musical studies with his sister Gerda and continued at the Tartu Music School with Martha Bäthge. In 1928, Lukk graduated from the Riga Conservatoire and in 1928–1933, he studied piano with Leonid Kreutzer and music theory with Paul Hindemith at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin.

Bruno Lukk made his debut as a soloist in 1931 in Riga, his first solo performance in Estonia took place in the same year. Lukk was highly valued as an Estonian music performer (Mart Saar, Heino Eller, Arvo Pärt et al.). Besides being a remarkable soloist, Lukk was a well-known ensemble partner. His collaboration with pianist Anna Klas lasted for more than 40 years. In every season, duo Klas-Lukk gave eight to twelve concerts, they performed classical music as well as contemporary music. Bruno Lukk also performed with cellist Peeter Paemurru, violinist Mari Tampere, mezzosoprano Ludmilla Dombrovskaja et al.

In 1939–1941, Lukk worked as a pedagogue at the Tartu Music School and from 1940 till his death in 1991, he worked at the Tallinn Conservatoire (1948–1952 he also held his post as a rector). The list of his students include Mall Sarv, Erna Saar, Vaike Vahi, Leelo Kõlar, Riina Gerretz, Arbo Valdma, Matti Reimann, Toivo Nahkur, Kalle Randalu, Ivo Sillamaa, Lembit Orgse, Lauri Väinmaa, Toomas Vana, Mati Mikalai et al.
