TÕNU KÕRVITS´S “ELEGIES OF THULE” PREMIERED IN TARTU

On February 23, concert dedicated to the 89th Anniversary of the Republic of Estonia took place in Tartu, Vanemuine Concert Hall, where the string section of Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra (conductor Toomas Vavilov) played “Elegies of Thule” (2007) by Tõnu Kõrvits. Composer says about the new three-part orchestral piece: “I have written quite a few pieces about Thule – the mystic and mysterious Northern land. Recently “Pictures of Thule”, and now “Elegies of Thule”. One may say that Estonian nature and people is the common line in these pieces. There I have also turned to the most primordial source – folksong.”

Besides Kõvrits´s piece, the concert program included Academic Festival Overture by Johannes Brahms and “Three Sonnets” by Lepo Sumera, performed by Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra, Karmen Puis (soprano), Hannes Kaljujärv (reciter) and Tartu Boys´ Choir. The new piece was commissioned by State Concert Institute Eesti Kontsert.
