Estonian Music Days Festival 2007

The 22nd Estonian Music Days will be introduced with a film programme in Cinema Sõprus, where puppet films with music by Estonian composers will be shown on April 11. The festival is organised by Estonian Composers’ Union, artistic directors are Timo Steiner and Ülo Krigul, this year festival composer is Veljo Tormis. Within the week nearly 30 concerts will take place in Tallinn, Haapsalu, Viljandi and Tartu.

The festival begins and ends with Veljo Tormis’s music – on April 12, at the opening concert in Estonia Concert Hall, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir with Tõnu Kaljuste conducting will present cross-section of composer’s choral works and at the final concert on April 18, opera „Swan Flight” written in 1966 will be on stage in Estonian Drama Theatre. Tormis’s music will be performed also at the other festival concerts and two CD-s with Tormis’s music will be presented.

For celebrating the 120th anniversary of birth of Heino Eller (1887-1970), the concert with music by Heino Eller and Mart Siimer, the laureate of the Heino Eller Music Prize 2007, will take place in Estonian Theatre and Music Museum on April 13. On April 17, Indrek Hirv’s play about Heino Eller „Bells of the St. Paul’s church”, will be on stage in Tallinn City Theatre, with Rain Simmul in leading role.

A great number of pieces will be premiered in annual Estonian music forum, as an example Toivo Tulev’s Mass, Peeter Vähi’s „Returning to Nowhere” for synthesizer, percussion and symphony orchestra, René Eespere’s „Cum intervallis” for harpsichord and many more. Among the performers there are Estonian best musicians and international ensemble „Bipolar” which consists of Estonian and German young interpreters. Students of Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and Tallinn Music High School will also present their works.

The festival program includes also opera „To define happiness” by English contemporary composer Gavin Bryars, which will be on stage in Customs Warehouse on the April 11 and 12. On April 14, opera „Cyrano de Bergerac” by Eino Tamberg will be played in Estonian National Opera.
