Mart Saar’s choral music on Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir CD

At the Mammoth Concert in Estonian Music Days Festival 2007, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir presented their new CD „Luule, see ei tule tuulest” („Rhymes do not come with wind”). The choir with Mikk Üleoja conducting recorded the best part of the Estonian choral music’s classic Mart Saar’s choral works.

Mart Saar (1882-1963) is a founder and one of the most powerful representative of Estonian national music style. Saar was among the composers who systematicly collected and analysed Estonian folk tunes which were the most important source of his music. Considerable part of Saar’s oeuvre consists of 350 choral songs on the lyrics by Estonian poets and folklore.

CD presents Mart Saar’s well-known songs like „Põhjavaim” („Northern spirit”), „Sööt”, „Lindude laul” („Birds’ song”), „Mets kohiseb” („Forest is rustling”), „Allik” („Wellspring”) and many others and composer’s colleague and good friend Peeter Süda’s single choral song „Linakatkuja” („Flax puller”). CD was recorded in June 2006 in Tallinn Methodist Church.
