Veljo Tormis’ music in the concert programme of the ensemble “The King's Singers”

The world famous British ensemble „The King’s Singers” will give four concerts in Estonia in next few days, the concert programme include Veljo Tormis’s „The Bishop and the Pagan” and “Wheel” from Bulgarian Triptych.

10-minute choral piece „The Bishop and the Pagan” was commissioned by “The King’s Singers” for the 14th Musik-Biennale Berlin, premiered March 18, 1993, in Berlin Schauspielhaus. Text is adapted from The Sequence of St. Henri by Sakari Puurunen. “Wheel” is the second movement of the Bulgarian Triptych written in 1978 and premiered in 1980, conducted by Ants Üleoja.

„The King’s Singers” have been active almost 40 years. Ensemble have commissioned music from many well-known composers including Krzysztof Penderecki, Luciano Berio, Peter Maxwell Davies and Ned Rorem. In 1994, “The King’s Singers” took part in the international choir festival “Tallinn” and since then they have given concerts in Estonia several times. Current concert programme consist of vocal arrangements of English madrigals, pop and folk songs and evergreen melodies, as well as music by Martinez, Josquin de Pres, Mateo Flecha, György Ligeti and Jean Sibelius. Concerts will take place on April 25 at 7 p.m. in Estonia Concert Hall, Tallinn, on April 27 at 7 p.m. in Pärnu Concert Hall, on April 28 at 7 p.m. in Tartu Vanemuise Concert Hall and on April 29 at 5 p.m. in Jõhvi Concert Hall.
