Erkki-Sven Tüür's "Wallenberg" at the Estonian National Opera

On June 1, Estonian National Opera presents the Estonian premiere of the Erkki-Sven Tüür's "Wallenberg" – opera on the tragic theme of Holocaust. The opera was written to the libretto of German playwright Lytz Hübner as a commission of the Dortmund Opera, Germany, and premiered at the same theatre on May 5, 2001. The main figure of the work is the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg (1912–1947?) who saved tens of thousands of jews from German concentration camps during the Second World War. The idea of the Estonian new production of the opera "Wallenberg" came from Dmitri Bertman – the world-famous theatre and artistic director of the Moscow Helikon Opera.

In "Wallenberg"'s new production, the opera's central theme of the Holocaust is seen from the wider perspective – observing the fate of a man under the pressure of totalitarian system. Jesper Taube, the baritone of the Royal Swedish Opera, is singing the opera's title role, Estonian singers Priit Volmer, Mati Turi, Jassi Zahharov, Väino Puura, Teele Jõks, Andres Köster, Mart Madiste, René Soom, Aare Saal, Helen Lokuta, Annaliisa Pillak, Juuli Lill, Riina Airenne, Aile Asszonyi and others are performing in other roles.
Arvo Volmer, the Estonian National Opera's artistic director and chief conductor, is the music director and conductor of the production. Risto Joost will make his debut as the second conductor. The production of Dmitri Bertman will be accomplished with the help of Neeme Kuningas, the chief producer of the Estonian National Opera. Ene-Liis Semper from the NO99 Theatre participates as a stage designer and director. The performances of the "Wallenberg" take place at the Estonian National Opera on June 1, 2, 6 and 8, and at the beginning of the new season, on September 21 and 22.
