Success of Ülo Krigul and Märt-Matis Lill at the 2007 Rostrum

June 5–9, the International Rostrum of Composers took place in Paris, organised by the International Music Council in co-operation with Radio France. In the category of composers under 30, the work voted as the best was Estonian composer Ülo Krigul’s (b. 1978) “Jenzeits” (2005), recorded by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paul Mägi. Voted among the 10 selected works in the general category was also Estonian composer Märt-Matis Lill’s (b. 1975) piece “My weeping voice is the wind of autumn” (2005) recorded by Ensemble U.

Ülo Krigul will be commissioned by Radio France to compose a new work for the contemporary music festival Présences 2009. Tiia Teder, Head of Music at Estonian Radio, was awarded the UNESCO Picasso-Miro medal for her outstanding work as producer.

At Rostrum 64 new recordings of contemporary music were presented by 31 radio stations, including Estonia’s Klassikaraadio. In the general category the winning composition was Erin Gee’s (b. 1974, USA) “Mouthpiece IX” (2006) for voice and orchestra.

Compositions by Estonian composers have been presented at the Rostrum for the past fourteen years, often with good results. In 2004, Helena Tulve’s orchestra work “Sula” was voted the most remarkable recording in the general category. In the category of young composers, two of Estonian representatives have come first – Mari Vihmand in 1996 and Jüri Reinvere in 2000.
