The II international Lepo Sumera composition contest winners announced

On March 25, the winners of the II international Lepo Sumera composition contest were announced. The first prize got Pui-shan Cheung (Hong Kong/USA) for the work "Dai pai dong", second prize Kee-Yong Chong (Malaysia) for the "Timeless metamorphosis" and third prize Andrea Portera (Italy) for the „frammenti ti umani… e di luce”. Brian Buch (USA) and Luca Antignani (Italy) received diplomas. Kristo Matson was awarded for the best Estonian composition.

This year the composition contest had 124 participants from 41 countries: Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovakia, Belgium, Croatia, Czech, France, United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia and Montenegro, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, USA, Canada, Brazil, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Malaysia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Japan, China, Thailand, Israel and Estonia.

The international jury consisted of composers Rolf Wallin (Norway), Regis Campo (France), Anders Hillborg (Sweden), Helena Tulve (Estonia) and conductor Toomas Vavilov (Estonia).

The final concert of the contest took place in the frame of the Estonian Music Days Festival in Estonia Concert Hall, Tallinn. The five finalist works were performed by Estonian National Symphony Orchestra under the guidance of Toomas Vavilov. At the same concert, Lepo Sumera's Piano Concerto from 1989 was performed by pianist Peep Lassmann and ENSO.
