V Estonian Young Composers Festival introduced new music

From June 16 to 18, the Fifth Estonian Young Composers Festival took place in Tartu. At three concerts in Tartu St John’s Church Estonian contemporary music was performed, a number of premiers among them.

At the opening day of the festival, a new version of the chamber opera "Sad joy" (2005) by Märt-Matis Lill on medieval love poetry was premiered under the stage direction of Ardo-Ran Varres.

On June 17, the Estonian premiere of Jüri Reinvere’s multimedia dance performance "Luft-Wasser-Erde-Feuer-Luft" with choreography of Michaela Fünfhausen (Germany) took place.

The programme of the final concert on June 18 included chamber music by Helena Tulve, Lepo Sumera, Galina Grigorjeva, Tõnu Kõrvits, Malle Maltis and Mirjam Tally as well as a number of first performances: “Two sad songs on the lyrics of Karl Ristikivi” for tenor, flute and piano by Toomas Trass, „Canorus” for four flutes by Kristjan Kõrver, „City of good thoughts” for violin and accordion by Timo Steiner, „Consolator” for Finnish zither by Lauri Jõeleht, „Reservoir 2” for chamber ensemble by Tatjana Kozlova and „Hommage” for bassoon, violin and piano by Mart Siimer (Estonian premiere).
