Ester Mägi’s composer recital at Suure-Jaani Music Festival

On June 23, Ester Mägi’s composer recital takes place at Suure-Jaani Church as the finale concert of the Suure-Jaani Music Festival 2006 held in little Middle-Estonian town Suure-Jaani from June 17 to 23, and organised by State Concert Institute Eesti Kontsert. Mägi’s chamber music from the years 1950–1996 will be performed.

In January 2007, grand old lady of Estonian music Ester Mägi celebrates 85th birthday. Mägi graduated from the Tallinn State Conservatoire with Prof. Mart Saar and pursued her postgraduate studies with Prof. Visarion Shebalin at the Moscow Conservatoire. Rooted in Estonian folk music Ester Mägi’s idiom is intimate in mood but strict and strenuous by musical logic.

The programme of the Ester Mägi’s recital includes the partita „Old town” for flute, harpsichord and chamber orchestra (1987), „Haikus” for baritone and piano on the words of Albert Koeney (1977), „Canto sentimentale” for trumpet and organ (1996), „Psalm” for cello and piano (1991), „Singing on the field” for voice and piano (1988, lyrics from Estonian folklore), second movement from the trio „Theme and variations on the theme by Mart Saar” (1950), organ piece „Gloria” (1998) and piano piece „Old kannel” (1985).

Ester Mägi’s music will be performed by Tobias String Quartet, Neeme Punder (flute), Jüri Leiten (trumpet), Mati Palm (bass), Merle Hillep (soprano), Peep Lassmann (klaver), Andres Uibo (organ) and Imre Eenma (double bass).
